Should Couric Remain on The CBS Evening News?

A recent article on "The Daily Beast" asks a question that has been asked a million times. Should Katie Couric resign with CBS News? Sunday marks Ms. Couric's 4th anniversary as anchor and managing editor of the "Tiffany" networks signature newscast, The CBS Evening News. In the last weeks Evening News has had it's lowest ratings since Nielsen has been keeping track. Couric and the newscast she leads have been winning prestigious awards while remaining in last place. Add all that to Ms. Couric's reported $15 million a year contract, CBS wont resign her without a drastic reduction in compensation.

It seems that if Katie decides to walk away from CBS News, she'll have multiple options. A return to NBC News? Maybe to CNN or into syndication? What do you think? Should Katie stay or should she go? If Couric leaves, who's the best option for a successor.

Woodward on the Evening Shift

This week Nadine Woodward made her first appearance filling in for the vacationing Robyn Nance. Nadine has been co-anchoring KXLY 4 HD News at 5pm, 6 and 6:30pm since Monday. Nadine has reported on the evening show in the past, but this is her first time as anchor.

Nadine's appearance has started a spirited conversation on TV Spy's "Watercooler Chat" Should Nadine and Robyn Nance shift positions? Should Kalae Chock return to Good Morning Northwest? Should Robyn and Nadine be paired in the evenings?

What do you think?

Daryl Romeyn Makes Fall Ballot

In Tuesday's primary, former KREM weather forecaster Daryl Romeyn placed second to incumbent Cathy McMorris Rodgers. In Washington, the top two candidates regardless of party, move on to the general election in November.

Daryl worked for KXLY from 1985 until 2003 and KREM 2003 until March of this year. Ms. McMorris Rodgers is in her third term in the US House of Representatives. Rep. Rodgers is a  republican and Romeyn is running as a democrat. The general election is November 2nd 2010.

Kadah Story in The Inlander

A story on Jason Kadah's departure from KREM 2 has made it into The Inlander. The article talks about the two Facebook pages showing support and love for Kadah. There is a huge amount of support for Jason and a lot of disgust and anger towards channel 2. KREM news director Noah Cooper  referred all questions to KREM general manager Jamie Aitken. Aitken is on vacation until Monday, The Inlander will check in with Aitken upon his return. Jason is unable to comment at this time, due to ongoing litigation.

"Keep Jason In Spokane" Building Momentum

A little over two months after his dismissal, Jason Kadah is more popular than ever. The former KREM 2 News First Edition and KREM 2 News at Noon meteorologist has some very loyal and very supportive fans. For the record, I count myself as one of those fans and supporters. There is a thundercloud over the South Regal headquarters of Spokane's CBS affiliate. It really started with Nadine Woodward's dismissal and built to a head with Jason's. There has been a mail, email and blog campaign to show support for Jason and anger at KREM 2 management. These fans have banded together to form a "Facebook" page "Keep Jason in Spokane". Now there are posters, shirts and mugs you can purchase to show your support for Jason and disgust with the once mighty two. Links to both pages are at the end of this post.

If you want to contact the KREM 2 management team, I've provided the names and address below. You can also go to KREM's website and contact station management. Beware, any "pro-Jason" or "anti-KREM" posts made to channel 2's website are almost immediately removed. As soon as Jason is able to talk, this blog will hopefully get the story first and bring it to you. Stay tuned!

First Interview With Rick and Teresa Lukens

The Spokesman Review has the first interview with now former KXLY anchors Rick and Teresa Lukens. It's a great article, worth the read. It sounds like both want to stay in broadcasting and stay in Spokane.

Rick and Teresa Lukens Fired

On Thursday July 15th, the Lukens were fired from KVNI-AM The Mighty 1080. Rick and Teresa had worked for The KXLY Broadcast Group from more than 20 years. 27 years in Rick's case. Both Rick and Teresa have held various positions during their tenure at KXLY. Most recently anchoring the morning news for the Coeur d'Alene based AM station.

Channel 4 Anchor Changes

Two days into the anchor changes at KXLY 4 HD News, any comments or critiques?

Good Morning Northwest anchor and managing editor Nadine Woodward now anchoring the full two hour broadcast? Does it seem more fast paced with Nadine going solo?

How is Kalae Chock doing at 11pm? Other than a few script stumbles, no glaring errors. Maybe a bit of an uncomfortable or cool welcome by the chief meteorologist?

What do you think? Was the right person moved to the "PM" shift? How long until Kalae co-anchors the earlier evening newscasts?

KXLY 4 News Update

Several anchor changes go into effect today, Monday July 12th on KXLY ABC 4.

Nadine Woodward will now anchor both hours (5am-7am) of Good Morning Northwest, weekday mornings. Mike Gonzalez and Mark Peterson retain their respective positions. Nadine has also been given the title of Managing Editor of "GMNW". Executive Producer Melissa Luck said "Nadine will serve as managing editor, using both her leadership and superb news judgment to help shape the format of “Good Morning Northwest”. Nadine will no longer be heard as an anchor on KXLY "NewsRadio920" KXLY Morning News. Kristi Gorenson is expected to take over Nadine's duties on the radio.

Kalae Chock moves from early mornings to the nightside beat this evening. Kalae will report for KXLY 4 HD News at 5pm, 6pm and 6:30pm. Kalae will solo anchor KXLY 4 HD News at 11pm weeknights. From the announcement of these changes KXLY said about Kalae "This will give KXLY4 News the opportunity to introduce Kalae’s reporting and anchoring skills honed over the last several years with “Good Morning Northwest” to our evening audiences."

Robyn Nance who had been anchoring the 11pm broadcast for almost 7 years will continue to anchor the early evening newscasts. Nance will add more public appearances to her schedule, work on special reports and take on additional editorial control over the 5pm and 6pm newscasts. Nance will also appear more frequently on KXLY NewsRadio 920AM.

Was the right person moved to the evening shift? What do you think of the changes at channel 4?

Kalae Chock Moving to Evenings at KXLY

Kalae Chock is leaving KXLY's Good Morning Northwest for the evening shift on channel 4. Kalae will report for KXLY 4 HD News at 5pm, 6pm and 6:30pm and co-anchor the 11pm weekday broadcast. Kalae has been anchoring "GMNW" for 5 years. Beginning Monday July 12th Nadine Woodward will anchor both hours of Good Morning Northwest alongside Mike Gonzalez.

The changes are being made as a result of KXLY's "impressive" May book ratings. KXLY insiders are crediting the massive print, TV, billboard and radio PR campaign announcing Nadine Woodward's arrival for the ratings gains. With this change viewers will now have a two hour daily dose of Nadine Woodward. Her loyal viewers will now know where to find her, weekday mornings on Good Morning Northwest.

Was the right person moved to the evening shift at KXLY? Will the "impressive" ratings continue during this month's book and on into the fall? The link to Kalae's blog is below.

Selling Nadine

In the Sunday edition of the "Spokesman Review" on the front page of the business section, Nadine Woodward. The title of the article is "Selling Nadine".

It in a nutshell this article talks about KXLY's marketing campaign around the arrival of Nadine Wooodward at KXLY TV and NewsRadio AM 920. It talks about Ms. Woodward's move from evenings to mornings and how difficult the transition has been. The "S-R" talked to Nadine's former co-anchor Charles Rowe, on the marketing blitz. Here is a quote from Mr. Rowe in the "S-R" article.

"It's the largest campaign of that kind I've seen in the years I've been here." He also said. "But they're in a real dogfight (for ratings) in the early morning hour." Mr. Rowe was the lead anchor for KREM 2 News from 1987 until his retirement in November 2007.

In the article it's also mentioned that KHQ General Manager Patricia McRae had contacted Nadine after her KREM departure last September. McRae said "There was no way we could add her (to our line-up) without disrupting the great team we now have."

In summary, it will take time to see if Nadine's move to mornings and KXLY will make any difference in the all important ratings. KXLY GM Steve Herling stated that the true test for Nadine, will be the November 2010 book. The link to the full article is below.

The real question is, will Nadine Woodward remain a morning anchor until November of this year? Or, will KXLY move Nadine to evenings to maximize on the ratings potential that is Nadine Woodward?

Kadah Update

Jason Kadah has a lot of vocal fans in the Spokane/Coeur d'Alene area. People have been calling, emailing and writing letters to KREM 2 news director Noah Cooper protesting the termination of Mr. Kadah. There have been lots of messages posted to a Spokesman Review article about Jason, plus this blog is seeing the most readers and comments since I launched this back in January. Someone has created a Facebook page titled "Keep Jason in Spokane". This page has 155 friends as of this post. Noah Cooper has once again shot himself in the foot. Mr. Cooper has also once again slapped KREM 2 News viewers in the face.

I have made an invitation to Jason to comment on his departure from channel 2 and what his future may bring. I have emailed news director Cooper for comment, without reply. I will put out some more feelers to see what else I can dig up. Keep the comments coming. If you have information or comments to share, feel free to do so.

Jason Kadah Fired from KREM 2

Friday, news director Noah Cooper fired KREM 2 News First Edition and KREM 2 News at Noon meteorologist Jason Kadah. Jason had one year left on a 3 year contract. Jason came to Spokane and KREM from Little Rock Arkansas station KARK.

When will the bloodshed stop at the deuce. How many talented people can Mr. Cooper drive away before BELO steps in? Many say Kadah was the best, if only reason to watch KREM 2 in the morning. During the February book KREM was in last place in the AM. Now there is no reason to watch KREM 2 News First Edition. Jason's bio is gone from KREM.com and his job is posted on the employment page.

Going Public

Yesterday afternoon, on my birthday, someone has decided to take it upon themselves to list my full name on the "Watercooler" message board on the site "TVSpy". So, after some thought over the last 24 hours. I've decided to out myself, to a degree. Yes, I am "GEGNews" on the message board. Yes, my name is Shawn. No, I am not the laundry list of other names that are always attached to me on the message board. Yes, I do not have any background in television or television news. No, I do not work in a grocery store. I work in the medical customer service field. I am a Spokane native who from an early age has had a love of television news. Yes, I have made some contacts in the business here in Spokane. Who they are does not matter, that's between me and them. I don't really know what else to share. My sincere hope with this site was to open up a positive discussion on local and national TV news. Also, to use this site as a place to talk to local journalists and pass on news about the news in Spokane. That is still my hope. With all your help. So, there it is. Feel free to contact me through the blog if you have any more questions or story ideas.

Kristi Gorenson Joins KXLY AM920

Former KREM 2 weekend anchor Kristi Gorenson has left the deuce. Ms. Gorenson was most recently working as a fill-in anchor and reporter on an as needed or freelance basis. Gorenson was last seen on KREM 2 back in early January, although her bio still appears on KREM's online bio page.

Kristi has been hired by the KXLY Broadcast Group as the producer of "The KXLY Morning News" on "NewsRadio AM920". Gorenson will also be heard on the air as a co-anchor of the morning newscast. Gorenson joins her former KREM colleague Nadine Woodward, who started her new job this last Monday morning. Congrats to Kristi on her new position.

Nadine Woodward to Anchor Good Morning Northwest on KXLY 4

It was announced today by the KXLY Broadcast Group that former KREM 2 anchor Nadine Woodward officially joins KXLY Monday. Nadine will co-anchor the 7am to 9am portion of The KXLY Morning News on NewsRadio 920AM. Beginning April 29th Nadine will co-anchor the 6am to 7am hour of KXLY 4 HD News Good Morning Northwest along side Mike Gonzalez. Nadine's radio partner is long time KXLY personality Bud Nameck. Current "GMNW" co-anchor Kalae Chock will remain anchor of the 5am to 6am portion of the morning newscast and report for the last hour of the show. Nadine will also take over health reporting and anchoring health specials from Rick and Teresa Lukens. It sounds like we will be seeing a lot of Nadine Woodward on KXLY 4.

Nadine Woodward will jump into the morning news wars for the first time in her 25 year career. Will Nadine's stay on Good Morning Northwest be a stepping stone to the evening broadcasts? What do Kalae Chock fans think of the move? Sounds like things are going to get interesting this spring on NewsRadio920 and KXLY 4 HD News.

Nadine Woodward Joins KXLY Next Week

The next phase of Nadine Woodward's career begins next Tuesday, March the 9th. Reports are that Ms. Woodward's primary job will be co-anchoring the KXLY Morning News on NewsRadio AM920 along side Bud Nameck. Nadine will also be filing "Special Reports" on KXLY 4 HD News.

I still think KXLY General Manager Steve Herling and News Director Jerry Post are shooting themselves in the foot using Nadine as a radio anchor at the crack of dawn in morning. Nadine is the best chance for ratings success that KXLY has had the fortune to hire in decades. Maybe AM radio is just a stepping stone to bigger and better things?

Nadine Woodward sues KREM and joins KXLY

On Tuesday in Spokane County Superior Court, Nadine Woodward filed an age and sex discrimination lawsuit against BELO owned KREM 2. Woodward anchored the evening newscasts at KREM for 19 years until her contact was not renewed in September 2009. In the Spokesman Review article that announced the filing of the lawsuit, it was announced that Nadine will join KXLY in mid March. The article says that Nadine had come to a deal to anchor the morning news on the radio and report special projects for KXLY 4 HD News in February. But, when KREM threatened to sue Ms. Woodward to enforce her 6 month non-compete clause, Woodward turned down those positions. It's unlear what Nadine will do when she joins channel 4 next month. The link below is to the Spokesman Review report.

The State Of Local News: Part Three

Here is the third and final post on the state of local news as I see it here in Spokane. The subject is KHQ-6.

KHQ Local News is becoming the dominant newsroom in the market. KHQ has been quietly working for years. Chipping away at KREM 2's once solid thrown atop the ratings mountain. Channel 6 has a lock on morning newscasts with KHQ Local News Today. The best thing KHQ has done in a very long time was bringing Shelly Monahan back to Spokane. Shelly, Dave, Sean and George are the team to beat in the AM. Instead of infomercials I'd like to see KHQ launch a Noon newscast. A Noon show anchored by Shelly and Dan Kleckner would kick KREM's noon show around the block and back again.

KHQ in the evenings has been in a spirited battle with KREM for first place. Dan Kleckner and Stephanie Vigil are now the longest running evening anchor team in Spokane. KHQ has moved away from the traditional model for it's sports department. Usually the sports director or in this case senior sports anchor would work Monday-Friday. But Sam Adams, channel 6's new senior sports anchor doesn't work a typical schedule. He and Matt Rogers split days during the week with on usually working one weekend day. KHQ recently brought in new chief meteorologist Bill Kelly. KHQ has re-branded it's weather forecasts with the "The Weather Authority" moniker. The graphics used to present the weather have also been given a slight facelift. It will take some time to see if viewers warm to Mr. Kelly. Tom Durian has turned out to be a great weekend anchor. Leslie Lowe was a very smart hire on former news director Jonathan Mitchell's part. Leslie comes across so warm and friendly, yet smart and authoritative.

One thought in these tough economic times. KHQ is anchor heavy. The morning show has three anchors. Dan Kleckner only anchors two newscasts daily. Although Mr. Kleckner anchors web updates during the day. Bill McGinty and Dana Haynes only anchor 30 minutes of television daily. Although the two FOX First at Ten anchors report heavily during the earlier evening broadcasts. And, Ms. Haynes recently took over the "Take It To Heart" health segments from Julie Humphreys who has left KHQ after more than 20 years. KHQ is blessed to have such a roster of impressive talent. Some have been with KHQ for more than 20 plus years. But with the stagnant economy and the massive layoffs at many newsrooms across the country. Can KHQ afford to keep everyone in their current lineup?

Overall, KHQ Local News is doing an excellent job. With Jana Gray's promotion to Executive News Director, what changes will she make to channel 6's newscasts? When will KHQ move to full high definition newscasts? With a tweak here and there, KHQ Local News could be unstoppable.

The State Of Local News: Part Two

Here is part two of a three part series on how I see the state of local news in Spokane. Today's subject is KXLY 4 HD News.

For the first time in a long time. Things seem stable and quiet at the last place newsroom on Boone Avenue. Dave Erickson has settled in as co-anchor of the 5pm, 6 and 6:30pm newscasts. Robyn Nance has always been a strong anchor. First as morning and noon anchor at KREM 2 and now as primary evening anchor on channel 4. Kris Crocker is one of the best forecasters in the market. One of the chinks in KXLY's armor would be moving Dennis Patchin to the radio and hiring Derek Deis as sports director. I would have never moved one of the most recognized personalities on Spokane TV to the radio. Dennis was doing an excellent job as sports director and lead anchor, there was no need for change. The old saying "If it isn't broke, don't fix it" motto is perfect for this situation. I have nothing against Derek Deis. He is a capable sports anchor and reporter. If I were going to move Dennis, which I wouldn't do. I would have went after former KREM 2 sports director and voice of the Gonzaga Mens Basketball team Tom Hudson before I would have went for Deis. Good Morning Northwest keeps moving along. Last book "GMNW" was fighting for second place. Kalae, Mike, Mark and Colleen are all great in their respective positions. Tori, Ben and Jared are good on weekends. KXLY is also in need of a bit of a facelift. The newsroom set is looking a bit haggard and the weather center is very outdated. Channel 4 has been using virtual sets, but they look odd. I don't know if its the program or the green screen behind that make the edges look rough. A shiny new set with some modern graphics would look great in High Definition.

Could the quiet and calm be coming to an end at KXLY? Rumors are that Nadine Woodward will join KXLY in some capacity. First rumors had the former KREM anchor moving to "NewsRadio920" as morning co-anchor along side Bud Nameck. Now the rumors are turning to Nadine taking Robyn Nance's position as evening anchor on TV and Robyn moving to the morning shift on AM radio. If KXLY were to hire Ms. Woodward, the best place for her would be on television. Channel 4 has been last in the ratings for many years now, nothing seems to move the ratings needle. Being first in HD news didn't help the ratings. If anything or anyone has the power to bring up ratings for KXLY 4 HD News it is Nadine Woodward. If I were Jerry Post or Steve Herling, I'd be talking to Nadine and doing what they can to bring her on board as evening co-anchor. I have nothing against Robyn Nance. She is a great anchor and reporter.  But, Robyn and Richard Brown didn't bring ratings. Robyn and Dave Erickson have not moved the ratings. Robyn has had 7 years to make a ratings difference and sadly that has not happened. Nadine becoming available gives channel 4 it's best chance in years to become a real competitor in the evening local news race. By the end of February we should have a better idea of where Nadine will land. And if she lands at KXLY, what position will she fill?

What do you think?

The State of Local News: Part One

This is the first of three observations I will offer. This is my personal view of the state of local news in Spokane. This is how I see each of the three news outlets in the Lilac City. So, here is what I see.

First, KREM 2 News.

KREM 2 News is in a time of transition. Lets go back to 2007. Charles Rowe retired in November after 20 years in the anchor chair. Move forward to September 2009. Nadine Woodward is let go after 19 years over a contract dispute. Flash forward to September 2011. KREM will lose "The Oprah Winfrey Show" as the lead in to the 5pm newscast. But, channel 2's problems run deeper. From multiple sources, it's been said that news director Noah Cooper is a tyrant and general manager Jamie Aitken is no better. In some of those same reports it's being said that Randy Shaw will retire at the end of his current contract. KREM weekend anchor Abbey Gibb doesn't belong at the anchor desk. Abbey is a good reporter, but not anchor material. John Langer should be anchoring channel 2's weekend newscasts. The deuce has two things going for it. First is Tom Sherry. As long as Tom works at channel 2, viewers will tune in to get their forcast from the regions most popular chief meteorologist. And the last bright spot. KREM 2 News First Edition. Finally KREM has a morning team that is watchable. A team that works well together and it comes across to the viewers. Sten, Laura, Grace and Jason are doing a great job.

Then there is the new 5 and 6pm co-anchor Jane McCarthy. As of this post, Jane has been on the air 4 days. I find it odd that KREM would move Jane from it's sister station KING 5 in Seattle, to Spokane to only anchor two newscasts. Nadine anchored 2 hours an evening, Jane anchors 1 hour nightly. My thought was maybe Jane would be utilized as a lead reporter for the 10 and 11pm newscasts. As of last Fridays 11pm newscast, Jane had not appeared on the later newscasts. First impressions of Jane have been positive, but it will take time for viewers to really warm to a new anchor. The February book will give us a first look at what viewers think of channel 2's new evening anchor team.

Now the minutiae. KREM's sets, all graphics, music and KREM's look in general is stale and dated. That said, KREM's viewer base is older. Older viewers don't like change, even the smallest of changes. Most viewers don't really notice sets and graphics. On the other hand, KREM needs to look modern to remain competitive with it's rivals for ratings. KREM needs a face-lift, desperately. Will KREM ever move to HD newscasts?

Finally the biggest question. Where and when will Nadine Woodward reappear? The latest rumor is that Nadine will join KXLY NewsRadio 920AM as a morning news anchor. I guess only time will tell?

Well there you go, for what it's worth. What do you think? I'd like to hear from some of you.

The NBC Late Night Disaster Continues

How much longer do we have to wait for NBC to confirm what we all know. That Conan O'Brien is leaving "The Tonight Show" and NBC. Since NBC Entertainment announced on January 10th that they were canceling "The Jay Leno Show" it's been drama daily. On Monday the 11th it was announced that NBC executives wanted to move Jay to 11:35pm for a half hour with Conan to follow at 12:05am. On the 12th Conan said he would not be pushed back to the later start time. Here we sit on day 11 of this saga, still no departure announcement for Conan from NBC. Published reports say that this Friday the 22nd will be Conan's last day as host of the 56 year old NBC late night show.

What do you think? Who got the shaft? Was Conan to blame, or Jay? Should NBC have given Conan more time to build an audience? Where will Conan end up?

Jane McCarthy Joins KREM 2 News

Tonight at 5pm, Jane McCarthy made her debut as co-anchor of KREM 2 News at 5 and 6pm. Jane succeeds Nadine Woodward who spent 19 years on channel 2. According to Ms. McCarthy's bio she will only anchor at 5 and 6pm? Why wouldn't she anchor the 10 and 11pm newscasts? What are your first impressions of Ms. McCarthy? The link to Jane McCarthy's KREM bio is below.
